The Melbourne Cup & Spring Racing Carnival
Melburnians love their horse racing, and despite the Spring Racing Carnival being the most visible event on the calendar, there’s plenty to offer the racing fan, whatever the time of year.
The race that stops a nation
For the avid Australian racing fan and casual punter alike, there’s no greater occasion than the Melbourne Cup. One of the world’s richest horse races, the meet is run at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November. Known around the country as ‘the race that stops a nation’ the cup attracts more than 100,000 punters and is the highlight of the Spring Racing Carnival (mid-October to mid-November).
What to wear
No longer just about the horses, the Spring Racing Carnival is now a high-profile event on the fashion calendar. With the most glamorous Australian and international stars descending on Flemington Racecourse to hobnob with politicians, sports heroes, and the business elite, it’s a Melbourne event like no other.
Metropolitan races
Throughout the year, metropolitan races take place at Flemington, Moonee Valley, Caulfield and Sandown racecourses.
